I was handed an official note informing me that my 10-year-old son has "graduated" from Language Support, Diazepam price, Buy no prescription Diazepam online, after one and a half years of tutoring, and will be joining his classmates in all of their regularly scheduled classes, purchase Diazepam online no prescription. Where can i buy cheapest Diazepam online, This is a big moment for EH and our family.

It is challenging to bring an American kid to Peru and to have him fit in with the local culture, buy cheap Diazepam, Where can i buy Diazepam online, as any expat can tell you. It is even more challenging to immerse your kid in a school where they teach in Spanish, as we did, rather than have him attend an all-English-speaking school, Diazepam For Sale. But we wanted our child to become fully bilingual and so we enrolled El Hijo in a Peruvian-British school, online buy Diazepam without a prescription, Diazepam over the counter, where the curriculum is 50% Spanish, 50% English, order Diazepam online c.o.d. Buy Diazepam from mexico, Educators speak of a window of opportunity, between ages 1 and 10, buy cheap Diazepam no rx, Diazepam from canadian pharmacy, when children can learn easily learn a second language and speak it without an accent. That was what we were hoping for when sent our son into a school where he would be surrounded by Peruvian kids, Diazepam pharmacy, Buy Diazepam no prescription, as well as a few stray English-speaking expats. It wasn't as easy a process as you might think, buy Diazepam from canada, Buy cheap Diazepam no rx, however, to get EH to accept Spanish as his second language, australia, uk, us, usa, canada, mexico, india, craiglist, ebay. Diazepam For Sale, El Hijo was angry for the first nine months. Buy Diazepam without a prescription, He spoke English to his bilingual classmates and was embarrassed to say much more than "hola" to his cousins. At the end of the school day, order Diazepam, Diazepam for sale, he'd race in the front door and plunk down in front of the television set to watch Cartoon Network, where some of his favorite cartoons showed in English, buy Diazepam without prescription. Purchase Diazepam online, "Cartoons sound dumb in Spanish," he complained to his Peruvian school friends, buy Diazepam from mexico, Diazepam samples, who rolled their eyes at "El Americano."

Gradually, EH stopped sniping about the dubbed Spanish dialog in "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy." About one year into our stay here, order Diazepam online c.o.d, Buy Diazepam online no prescription, he began speaking mainly in Spanish to his friends. They taught him the Lima schoolyard slang and rude songs about dogs doing pedos, buy no prescription Diazepam online. It wasn't what he was being taught in Language Support, but somehow it fitted with the formal Spanish to form a working vocabulary for a 10-year-old, Diazepam For Sale.

His school papers in Spanish began to improve. He began to out-talk me. He began to be embarrassed by his gringa mother's accent.

He was on his way.

A lump rose in my throat today when his Language Support teacher told me EH no longer needed her services. We had leaned on her so much, and now she was setting our son free.

Amazingly, our American kid is now a bilingual Peruvian.

(la) Chompa (CHOM-pah): If you analyze it, the English word "sweater" is an ugly term for something that's usually quite nice. The word sounds sweaty, a bad association to have with something warm and fuzzy that you wear next to your skin and typically don't wash that often. Worse, the word also can refer to a person who sweats a lot ("Yep, my firstborn never did keep his covers on at night. Always was a sweater.").

Isn't there a word in another language that expresses the nice-wooly-pullover concept better?

Enter the Latin American "chompa," which translates as "pullover sweater" but is more fun to say. To my ear, "chompa" has a chomping, chowing-down quality that is distinctly un-sweaterlike -- nothing fibrous or fuzzy or sensuous about it; however, the informal "chompa" does suggest a handy thing you can dive into on a damp, grey winter's day, which is just about every day, May through December, in Lima.

A good word to shout up the staircase: "Dame mi chompa, mi amor."

Peruvians use "chompa" almost exclusively when referring to a pullover sweater, although there are other terms in Spanish (see Synonyms, below).

Synonyms

Chompa isn't the only word for "sweater" in Spanish. Depending on what Spanish-speaking country you're in, you can keep warm with a "suéter," a "buzo," or a "jersey," among other things. Browsing through allwords.com, I found these Spanish-language synonyms for "sweater":

Spanish: chaleco (i, Southern Spain - specifically Seville), buzo (i, Colombia - also suéter), chomba (i, Chile), chompa (i, Bolivia, Peru), jersey (i, Spain standard usage) , pulóver (i, Argentina), suéter (i, Latin America) (trans-bottom) (trans-top, a person who sweats).

Note that, as with the English "sweater," the Spanish noun "suéter" can refer to "a person who sweats." (Yuck again.)

Etymology

The origins of "chompa" are detailed on some Web sites. One is run by a Chilean biker/wine buff named Valentín who cites the frequent claim that "chompa" comes from the English term "jumper," a type of sweater worn by sailors.

I don't know. "Jumper." "Chompa." "Jumper." "Chompa."

It's a big leap but stranger word mutations have happened.

The word sounds sweaty, a bad association to have with something warm and fuzzy that you wear next to your skin and typically don't wash that often. Worse, the word also can refer to a person who sweats a lot ("Yep, my firstborn never did keep his covers on at night. Always was a sweater.").

Because the g-word is (1) too loaded to serve as my moniker, and (2) I am more American than I care to admit.

Some reader is probably wondering, 'Isn't it incorrect nowadays to use the term American when referring to someone from the United States? Aren't all people from South America Americans as well?"

Well, yes, for a long time that is what I thought, too. However, since moving to Lima, I find myself frequently referred to by Peruvans as the Americana (female American). The word appears to be synonymous with North American down here. Further, I haven't as yet heard a single Peruvian identify herself (or himself) as an Americana or Americano.

As long Peruvians continue to call me an Americana, I'll keep the name on this blog.

But if anyone wants to buy me this cool t-shirt from Latin Laundry, a "Pan-Latino" clothing company in New Jersey, they're welcome to do so.
