Crossing Cultures,  Looking Back at the United States

Another Thing I Miss about the United States

Canadian maple syrup from Maple Orchard FarmsMaple syrup.

You can’t buy it in Peru. If you want syrup for your pancakes, you have to go with the corn syrup blends they sell in the supermercado. It’s not the same.

Just looking at the picture on the right makes me salivate.

A cousin from Massachusetts sent me a jar of maple syrup two months ago. It was like having liquid gold sent to your doorstep. El Hijo and I went into a frenzy of pancake-making.

I don’t think anyone was ever so ecstatic eating a stack of pancakes.

I am an American writer who lived in Lima for seven years (2007-2014), where I covered Andean traditions, melting glaciers and daily life in the capital for Miami Herald, MSNBC and Huffington Post. I now live and work in northern Florida where I champion climate change advocacy and compassionate, affordable eldercare.

    Koca,
I’m not a fan of honey, unlike El Fotografo, who loves his miel. I know it’s an alternative, but there’s no substitute for real maple syrup for me!
