Vote for the 7 Gastronomic Wonders of Peru
Peru has discovered the marketing power of the voter-powered “Best of” list.
The trend began in 2007 when a global poll of 100 million voters chose Machu Picchu as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The prestige and tourism revenues generated by that honor inspired Peru to mount its own contest to name the 7 Wonders of Peru. Winning sites include the Inca baths of Cajamarca, Colca Canyon and the Kuelap Fortress in the Amazon. (Given its status as a World Wonder, Machu Picchu was not eligible for nomination.)
Now a group called Acidoungusto Comunicaciones is sponsoring an online poll to determine the Seven Gastronomic Wonders of Peru (las 7 maravillas Gastronómicas del Perú).
The first round of voting encompasses an eye-popping list of 100 typical Peruvian dishes, including asado de res, lomo saltado and picante de cuy. No desserts are among the nominees, which means that a contest to determine Las 7 Mejores Postres del Peru is probably slated for 2010.
Log onto Votas por tus 7 before February 15 to cast your vote for your seven favorites.
Twenty-one semifinalists will be chosen from the original 100 dishes to compete in the final round of voting, which closes May 15. The seven winning dishes will be announced July 27, the day prior to Peru’s Independence Day. (I suspect the judges chose July 27, rather than Independence Day itself, to give chefs and foodies a 24-hour-window to shop for ingredients for a celebratory meal.)

Everything look so awesomely good and tasty that it’s so difficult to pick 7!!!
The pic of the Papa Rellena reminds me that grandma makes Papa Rellena in a different style from the the typical one like in the above pic. I consider my grandma’s style of making Papa Rellena more delicious!!

Umm, Stuart –you can only pick seven.:)
Miguel, how does your abuela make her papa rellena?
Miguel
Well basically the potatoes are mashed like when you make the typical one, and you put the same seasoning; however, my grandma adds lemon juice on the them, and continues mashing them. She does not fry them. And, she puts the grinded meat filling in them like in the typical one, and pours on them rocoto sauce, which makes a wonderful and tasty flavor! Spicy and sour =]
Barb
Rocoto sauce is a different touch — mmmm.

Asking for the 7 best Peruvian dishes is like asking for which 7 days you’d like to live. Just not enough.
Peru has more than 400 regional dishes, how do you choose?
Barb
I agree. The range of dishes is staggeringly large.
Maybe the fairest way to go about narrowing down the options is to be objective about it. Taste each of the nominated dishes. It would only take you, what, several months?!

Ricardo, les falto incluir el cebiche de pollo a la trujillana, el cebiche de conchas negras, sangresita, milanesa, ya no sigo porque me da hambre. Que rica y diversa es nuestra comida!!
Barb
Si, Julio!

Miguel, that sounds like what would be a Causa de Carne, which I guess is great for meat lovers. In my case I prefer both Causa and Papa rellena filled with veggies and olives.
Still, I love that the not frying part makes it healthier.
