10 Facts about Anderson Cooper’s Hair (Plus a Super-Extra Bonus Grooming Link for Guys)

I learn some surprising things managing this blog.

Like: Many people spend time online researching men’s haircuts. I think these people are mainly guys looking for a new look, although they could be search-engine-savvy hairstylists hoping to replicate certain cuts in their salon.

This blog strayed into Men’s Hairstyles SEO when I posted on El Fotografo’s search for the Anderson Cooper haircut in a Lima salon, a quest that resulted in his getting scalped last month. As my post describes, EF secretly decided to go for The Silver Fox look after misinterpreting a remark I made while watching the CNN “Planet in Peril: Battle Lines” segment on La Oroya.

As EF later found out, my secret wish was for him to get his hair cut like Daniel Craig, not like AC.

Fast-forward one month later: El Fotografo’s military cut has finally, finally grown out to resemble the Anderson Cooper ‘do he originally requested, and my blog keeps attracting traffic from people whose Google searches read “I want a Daniel Craig haircut” and “Anderson Cooper + haircut + hot.”

Sigh.

This blog covers serious stuff like melting glaciers and toxic smelting plants but more often than I plan, it veers into the realm of the absurd. It would be easy to blame those digressions on “weird” Peru but that wouldn’t be fair. I am the culprit. I digress because I’m intrigued by how one idea engenders another, and because I’m curious about what prompts people to visit An American in Lima, intentionally or not.

For the sake of the 127 people who visited this blog hoping to take a few grooming tips from Anderson Cooper and Daniel Craig, here are 10 random factoids about AC’s short cut and his grey hair (I’ll post on Craig soon):

1. The most boring activity Anderson Cooper can think of is having his hair cut, he admits.

2. Anderson gets his hair cut every three weeks.

3. The Silver Fox pays $15 for a haircut at a Chelsea barbershop, according to Page Six in 2009. (Note: Cooper’s mom is a Vanderbilt. $$$$$.)

4. The About.com men’s hair expert categorizes Cooper’s haircut as “The Classic Ivy League.” The low-maintence style is ideal for busy men, like reporters, who want to look well groomed while spending little time on their hair.

5. Cooper’s short cut is ideal for youthful-looking guys who’ve gone prematurely grey because the style focuses attention on the face, not on the scalp, claims Celebrity Lifestyle Tips.

6. Cooper occasionally fantasizes about getting a Mohawk but doubts that CNN would permit it, AC told Blender in 2005.

7. Pop-culture blogger Pink Sheep of the Family started nasty rumors in April 2008 that Anderson was sporting a Donald Duck haircut and that The Silver Fox had hair implants to cover his baldness. Commenters took the blogger to task, asserting the AC’s hair is both real and thick.

8. Cooper’s hair began turning grey at age 20, he explains in an excellent essay originally published in Details magazine in 2003.

9. While on Jay Leno’s show in August 2007, Anderson Cooper compared going prematurely grey to experiencing a common male sexual problem:  “I started [getting gray hair when I was] young,” he said to Leno. “It’s like premature ejaculation. You know it can happen but when it happens to you, it’s kind of a shock.”

10. A hairstylist who has cut the hair of Anderson Cooper and Bill Clinton (I don’t think it’s the $15-a-haircut guy on 8th and 23rd) will be teaching courses at the $22 million Academy for Hair and Skin by Elan Sassoon (son of Vidal) in Sept. 2009 in Boston. So if you want to know how the cut is achieved, all you have to do is move to Boston and enroll in the younger Sassoon’s school and become a hairstylist.

I think, or rather, I hope that I have exhausted the subject of Anderson Cooper’s hair for this blog. (Then again, you never know.)

However, as an added bonus for serious information seekers. here is a super-useful link to a roundup of current celebrity haircuts that would look good on normal guys too. Take your styling cue from Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, Ty Pennington, Anderson Cooper, Lenny Kravitz or Adrian Grenier. I am an American writer who lived in Lima for seven years (2007-2014), where I covered Andean traditions, melting glaciers and daily life in the capital for Miami Herald, MSNBC and Huffington Post. I now live and work in northern Florida where I champion climate change advocacy and compassionate, affordable eldercare.
